The Hidden Star: The Golden Chamber (Güldenkammer)

This picture shows the Golden Chamber
The Golden Chamber

It is a jewel. Bremen's much envied pride and joy, the Güldenkammer (Golden Chamber) is one of the very few Art Nouveau rooms still preserved in its original form. Stepping into the chamber one is met with an almost merry sense of festiveness. The room glows in splendor yet is at the same time cosy. At the beginning of the 20th century, the room, built in 1595, was remodeled by Heinrich Vogeler (1872-1942). He designed a complex work of art evoking unique ornamental vitality. The delicate, intertwining motifs of Art Nouveau are found wherever one looks. Every detail, from the door handle to the lamps, is interwoven into an harmonious unity. The walls are covered with gilded leather wallpaper reaching up to the ceiling.
